Breathwork Zurich
A studio guide for nervous-system regulation, focus, stress relief and deeper recovery – in Zurich Wiedikon and at home.
Wiedikon studio
In the constant hum of modern Zurich life – deadlines, notifications and pressure to perform – we often forget the most fundamental tool we have to regulate our inner world: the breath.
What if you could use this simple automatic process consciously to reduce stress, improve focus and unlock deeper states of wellbeing?
Welcome to breathwork. This is not just taking a deep breath when stressed. It is the conscious, systematic practice of changing breathing patterns to support mental, physical and emotional health.
From ancient yogis to modern neuroscientists, the power of breath has been studied and respected for thousands of years. This Templeshape guide leads you through history, science and practical techniques for home.

Basics
Although breathwork is now a wellness buzzword, its roots are ancient and deep. It bridges old wisdom and modern science.
In ancient India, pranayama – the expansion or control of life force – was a pillar of yoga. Techniques such as alternate nostril breathing were used to prepare the mind for meditation.
In ancient China, Taoist practices such as Qi Gong and Tai Chi used specific breathing patterns to cultivate and balance vital energy.
Modern breathwork became known in the West in the 1960s and 70s through pioneers such as Stanislav Grof and Leonard Orr. Today it ranges from gentle regulation to deep transformational breathwork.
Science
Breathwork is the art and science of conscious breathing. Its effects are grounded in physiological mechanisms.
Your autonomic nervous system regulates heart rate, digestion and breathing. The sympathetic branch activates fight or flight; the parasympathetic branch supports rest, digestion and recovery.
Chronic stress keeps many people in sympathetic overdrive. Slow breathing with extended exhales can help switch on the parasympathetic system manually, partly through the vagus nerve.
HRV, CO2 tolerance and cortisol also matter. Conscious breathing can improve self-regulation, create focus and make stress responses more tangible.
Toolkit
Gentle breathing exercises can be practised at home. Intense methods belong in a safe guided setting.
Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4.
Immediate stress reduction, focus and mental calm.
Inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8.
Supports sleep and acute anxiety regulation.
Deep nasal inhale, small second inhale, long mouth exhale.
Fast real-time calming and mood support.
Guided
Conscious Connected Breathwork uses a continuous rhythm without pauses between inhale and exhale. It can help release stored emotional energy.
Holotropic breathing uses fast, deep breathing with evocative music to reach non-ordinary states for psychological processing.
Because these techniques can trigger intense physical and emotional responses, we strongly recommend practising them with guidance and in a safe setting.

Safety
Gentle breathing exercises are safe for many people. Consult a doctor before intense breathwork if any of the following apply:
